Who is conducting this project?Back to FAQ's
The San Antonio River Authority (SARA) is conducting the Westside Creeks Restoration Project, a community-based planning effort. To assist during the Conceptual Design Phase, SARA has hired a team of consultants.

Where is the project area?Back to FAQ's
The project area includes approximately 14 miles of the Alazán, Apache, Martinez, and San Pedro Creeks, primarily located in the city’s urban core.  For a better understanding of the project limits, please see the project map.

What is the purpose of the project?Back to FAQ's
While currently in the Conceptual Design Phase, the ultimate project is expected to:

The Conceptual Design Phase includes a significant public involvement effort led by an oversight committee comprised of two co-chairs and community leaders representing 20 organizations throughout the city and the city’s Westside.  Once implemented, the project will provide increased opportunities for the creeks in the city’s urban core and will be enjoyed by people from all walks of life and all parts of the county.

How will the creeks be restored?Back to FAQ's
The Westside Creeks Restoration Project aims to create concepts for restoring the creeks in such a way that keeps with the rich historical and cultural background of the community.  The project will seek to incorporate key historical and cultural features into the design of the project in order to reflect the community and contextualize the project.

Today, the Westside Creeks’ primary function is flood control.  They contain little vegetation, are lined with concrete or concrete rubble, and exist to quickly move water during flood events. The Westside Creeks Restoration Project will provide concepts for ecosystem restoration that will increase the biological stability of the creeks and reintroduce native plant and wildlife. Through a citizen-driven conceptual design process, community input will drive the design concepts for environmental restoration of the creeks while maintaining efficient and effective flood control.

When will the Conceptual Designs recommended by this project be built?Back to FAQ's
Currently, there are no funds immediately available and, additionally, the project would need to proceed to detailed design before it is ready for implementation.  Once a design has been further refined and cost estimates prepared, funding will be sought to implement the project in phases similar to the work currently being done by the City of San Antonio, Bexar County, US Army Corps of Engineers, SARA, and the San Antonio River Foundation on the San Antonio River Improvements Projects.
